Vocabulary & Autonomy

Make the learner autonomous with lexical tools : machine translation, texts banks, dictionaries.
Machine translation or not ?

Learner autonomy is not related only to distance learning (if it ever was supposed so). Even standard classroom dynamics implies most issues about learner autonomy.

Nevertheless, distance and/or blended teaching increases problems related to learner autonomy.

University students will inevitably use machine translation for their homework and revision. I do not agree with a "banish machine translation in school language classrooms"  mindset.

Even when inappropriately used, the real questions are:
What will the real learning value of the tool be?

How can it be used synergically with other tools and artifacts?

In this video, shot during one of my classes by videoconferencing, I show learners how a dictionary is useful, how to make the most out of machine translation, what must be avoided of a dictionary and its traps.
